Do You Have An Underground Tank?
As a home or property owner, it's best to look for refill valves in your yard or home to assist with oil tank detection. Fill valves are used as the access point to underground oil tanks so, if you can find a fill valve, chances are there is a tank just below you. Also, if you see a valve near your gas meter, you can be sure that you have an oil tank left underground. Fill valves are usually only inches off the ground in your yard or garden. However, in some cases, your fill valve may collapse with the ground or be covered in snow or leaves, making it difficult to notice.
If you've found vent pipes in or near your home, you may also have an oil tank that needs to be removed. Vent pipes were previously used for ventilation of underground oil tanks because oil was transferred to heat homes. If you find that your home has a vent or vent valve that appears on the ground, contact a professional at Brinks Tank Service.
The home is located in an older neighborhood (pre-1960s) where most homes used to, or currently, heat with fuel oil or kerosene.
Natural gas service was established years after the house was built.
